The Best Spots in North San Diego County To Take Your Baby, Toddler or Preschooler.

I have been so impressed by all of the incredible places to take my young kids here in North San Diego County. Since my partner and I find that weekends are when parenting is at its hardest I have been on the hunt for the most enjoyable places for both my kids and for me. Below are some of my favorites:

1. San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum in Escondido, CA

My kids and I really love this charming children’s museum in Escondido, CA. Typically we will get breakfast or lunch (and dessert) at EscoGelato (a short walk from the museum) and then spend a few hours at this museum. There are lots of things to see and do and this museum offers both indoor and outdoor exhibits. I appreciate that it is pretty contained and there is a separate area for kids 2 and younger. I have found that this is one of the few places I feel confident taking my 4 year old and my 1 year old by myself. It is also really helpful that because this is a children’s museum no one bats an eye if my kids are running around, talking loudly, or arguing over toys. :)

2. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens in Vista, CA

This is such an amazing gem in Vista. There is an adorable children’s garden where kids can roam around and explore. They have an awesome selection of outdoor instruments for kids to play and plenty of space to enjoy a snack. There are also really cool dinosaur sculptures throughout the garden which my kids always enjoy. I really love to come here to unwind, relax, and take a break. I highly recommend picking up food beforehand and having a picnic in the gardens. They also offer monthly classes for kids in the garden. (Check their website for specific times and offerings.)

3. Jack’s Pond Nature Center in San Marcos, CA

This nature center is so impressive it could seriously be its own children’s museum. It has been completely renovated and has several different rooms inside of a restored barn. There are so many different activities, toys, and animals my kids always want to stay as long as possible. The only downside is that it is only open limited weekend hours as it is run by volunteers, but dont let that stop you this place is an absolute gem. Be sure to check the hours and get there when it opens so you have as much time as possible to explore. Also there is a playground directly outside and there is also a fun walk that leads to a fun small toddler playground. (And bathrooms) Highly recommend checking this out! Plus its free!

4. San Diego Botanical Gardens in Encinitas, CA

One of my favorite places to take my kids as it has such peaceful energy. There are two incredible children’s gardens complete with a super fun tree house for kids to climb, a running creek for kids to put their feet (and water toys in.) They also have snacks, coffee and bathrooms. There is also another children’s area with a fun sandbox and model train. The gardens also offer toddler time multiple times per week that includes really fun art projects and other activities. I like to get Mendocino Farms (curbside pick up) then eat lunch here. This is also a really great option if you have multiple kids as it is contained and more manageable to watch both kids at once.

5. Encinitas Library in Encinitas, CA

This is my favorite library for kids in North County hands down. This library has an incredible kids area with lots of fun toys, books, tables and art supplies (the ocean view also doesn’t hurt!) They have a really cute outdoor area perfect for snack breaks. Also I love to go to this library with my kids and then literally cross the street where there is a beautiful gated playground. Super fun way to spend a fun morning or afternoon. This library also has great weekend hours! Sometimes if I am feeling extra ambitious I will head to the Crack Shack for lunch/dinner as it is just a few minutes away and has a really fun outdoor sandbox for kids!

6. San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, CA

My kids and I love the safari park and go all the time. They have two playgrounds inside the safari park that are both really fun and easy. They also have a really fun tram and walking trails throughout the park. It is also nice to have bathrooms, drinks and snacks easily accessible and available. My kids also really enjoy the bird aviary to hang out and admire the birds right when you walk in. I also really love to take my kids to the Safari Park in December to enjoy the lights and holiday activities which is included in admission.

7. Lullabar in Carlsbad, CA

This list is definitely not complete without the Lullabar. This company has been such an incredible resource for moms in North San Diego County. I have taken my kids here numerous times to enjoy the child watch play space while I get to enjoy a latte and relax in the cafe. This has given me such needed breaks and resets and I highly recommend checking them out. They have a large variety of workshops and classes for moms and littles and I am so grateful to have them in the community!
